My interpretation of 'Grandfather' by Jayanta Mahapatra
The poet is reading his grandfather's diary and is reminiscing. The diary is old and the years have turned its pages from white to yellow. The poet is thinking about his grandfathers old days when he was younger, when he lived life. The poet questions how old his grandfather must be when he realised he was dying. How the authors grandfather left his family because he didn’t want his family to see him dying hence calling him a coward for running away. He’s drawing pictures in his mind of how the state might be. How he lived without his family. Wether he was in need of anything. Towards the end of the poem he talks about how the earth has received his grandfathers body, a mention of his because after all everybody eventually does die and goes to god. His mention on how his grabdfathers body is frail and there is nothing his grandfather can do about it, he needs something but he can’t get it.
